Tasks
Capture tasks in Markdown, set dates and priorities, and edit their source through native views.
On this page
Tasks live in Markdown notes. Obsibrain indexes them across the vault and displays matching tasks in native views. A task can stay beside the project, meeting, or note that explains it.
Create a task
Run Add Tasks and Habits. Choose a normal task, enter its title, and select the note that will store it. Add optional due and scheduled dates, then choose a priority.
Use a due date for a deadline. Use a scheduled date for the day you plan to work on the task. The command accepts dates with times when you need a timed reminder.
You can also write the Markdown directly:
- [ ] Draft the outline [due::2026-09-18] [scheduled::2026-09-16] [priority::high]
To associate work elsewhere with a project, put its note link in the task:
- [ ] Review the outline for [[Website refresh]]
Edit and complete
Use the actions in a task view to edit or complete the task. These actions change the original note. In an editor, put the cursor on a task line and run Edit Task.
Choose a repeating task in Add Tasks and Habits when the action recurs. Enter its repeat frequency, then finish the date and priority prompts. Use habits when you also want habit tracking.
Clean up completed work
Completed-task cleanup runs only through its manual command. Settings → Obsibrain → Task Cleanup controls the age threshold, based on the completion date.
Before deletion, Obsibrain previews affected tasks and files and asks for confirmation. Deletion removes the task and its indented content, including nested notes or subtasks. Check the preview and preserve any content you still need.
For reminders, enable Notifications in Obsibrain settings. Reminders work while Obsidian is open. They do not provide external calendar or reminder synchronization.
